St George's Hospital, Stafford

The St Georges Hospital is part of the South Staffordshire & Shropshire NHS Foundation Trust and provides a range of services for the treatment of mental health conditions including two forensic units, Ashley and Radford.

The trust brought Kingsway Group in to provide a solution to replace the existing out dated solutions for doorsets and vision panels.

Our proposal was geared around providing a safer means of operating the doors. We introduced our SWING doorset solution to replace existing pivot set doors. This allowed the doors to be opened outwards in any anti-barricade situations due to a full length continuous aluminium hinge, with the addition of the SWING Thru strike plate it allowed the doors to be opened even when the bolt is thrown, making the process easier and quicker. This provided a stronger, more secure and reliable system over against what was already in place.

The vision panels included were the Duralux and Visilux products; privacy vision panels controllable by a centre panel operated by a key from the staff side and a thumb turn from the patient side. The Duralux were introduced for the Forensic areas and the Visilux for all other patient rooms. Picture vision panel parts were included to help improve the environment within the ward and add a bespoke personal touch to each room.

Kingsway door hardware was specified on each doorset to ensure the ligature risk was eliminated and the durability was appropriate.

As a result, the hospital now have doorsets that provide tangible benefits for all staff and service users, additionally give the warn a non-institutional and non-clinical appearance. The new solution will allow barricade solutions to be overcome simply and effectively whilst patient observation can now be undergone discreetly, preserving patient privacy.
